The Clearness or Purity of a Diamond

Millions of years ago diamonds formed under tremendous heat and pressure out of pure carbon deep within the earth .
Often-time,  impurities were trapped inside of the crystallized carbon resulting in what we today call inclusions (flaws). There are several types of inclusions and every diamond is different in the number and type of that it contains.
Diamonds are graded under 10 power magnification according to strict standards established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). According to the graders adherence to those standards, diamonds are given one of the following clarity grades:

Unfortunately, not everyone grades diamonds to the same standards. It is important that consumers deal with someone they feel confident will not over grade a stone. The Diamond Consortium takes pride in the conservative nature with which we grade our diamonds. Many diamonds come to us already grade by a reputable lab such as G.I.A. or E.G.L. (We don't readily accept certificates from other labs or stores.)
