The Better the Cut, the More Brilliant the Diamond

Fine Cut

Fire

Leaky - Shallow

Leaky - Deep

A Russian cutter (1919) by the name of Tolkowsky determined that if a diamond was cut to a specific formula 89% of the light entering a diamond would be reflected back out the top of the diamond. Not only does the light travel back out the top of the stone but it is also refracted into all the colors of the spectrum. This is what we refer to as the fire and beauty of a diamond.

As cutters have attempted to increase the weight of the finished diamond (thus the price - refer to Carat Weight ) they have cut a diamond outside of the parameters established for a
FINE CUT diamond, thus they have created what we refer to as a LEAKY diamond. Diamonds that leak light may appear pretty enough when clean and under the jewelers spot light, however, after a few days of normal wear and dirt accumulation under the stone, it's like someone turned off the light switch. Leaky diamonds have dark areas in the stone, or are washed-out looking.

We have determined that Diamonds fall into one of three categories:

Fine Cut

Well Cut

Poor Cut

About 60% of the diamonds we see fall into the well cut catagory. Most people you know with a diamond probably have a well cut. It's pretty!

About 20% of the diamonds we see fall into the Fine Cut catagory. They are beautiful ! But... they cost more. Therefore, most diamond sellers, (especially discounters) avoid buying them. They just don't allow sellers to hit the price points they need to and still maintain profit margins.

We think we can provide you with a Fine made Diamond for less than others sell Well Made stones.
